Yuin Astronomy Night

Under the Stars with Indigenous knowledge holders
with the Yila Healing Trail Festival

Saturday 19th October 2024
7 pm - 9 pm

📍Sanctuary Point playground, Sanctuary Point.

When was the last time you sat outdoors, looked up and admired the beauty of a sparkling night sky? Stargazing does wonders for easing our minds, rejuvenating our spirits, and finding a sense of peace and calmness amongst the chaos.

Beyond the instant comfort that it brings to us individually, Indigenous astronomy has played a key foundation for storytelling, song and dance that has been passed down through generations for tens of thousands of years. Long before the Babylonians, Greeks and the Renaissance came Indigenous astronomy from our First Australians - the oldest, continuous living culture in the world.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people developed a number of practical ways to read and live according to the stars.

In collaboration with Yila Healing Trail, a Shoalhaven-wide festival celebrating community healing through nature and Indigenous teachings on Connection to Country, we are honoured to gather under the Moon rise and by the water with our special guest speakers, Muruwari man and Aboriginal astronomer Willie Stevens as well as Yuin artist Aunty Sharon Mason. Hosted by Uncle Paul McLeod, they will share their perspective on the link between Sky and Culture that continues to inform the local Yuin community.

Our astrophysicist Dimitri will be offering guided-telescope viewing to explore the wonders of our South Coast’s dark skies, including the Moon and the anticipated comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan - ATLAS) above the waters. Join us for a gathering of awe, culture and community.

Note: In case of rainy weather, the event will be held indoors in Old Erowal Bay. Details be sent on the day.
